A groundbreaking peer-reviewed study published in Veterinary Dermatology (2025) has confirmed that daily oral supplementation with Activ Daily significantly improves the skin microbiota in dogs. This landmark study, led by researchers from the University of Adelaide, is the first of its kind to examine the effects of a combined Prebiotic, Probiotic and Postbiotic supplement on the canine skin microbiome using advanced full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing—widely regarded as the gold standard in microbiome analysis.
The study followed twelve Golden Retrievers over a 90-day period, all living in the same controlled environment to eliminate external variables. Throughout the study, the dogs received a daily 10g Activ Daily chew, formulated with four proprietary strains of beneficial bacteria—Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Enterococcus faecium, and Bifidobacterium animalis—developed specifically for dogs. Swab samples were collected before supplementation, and again at Day 30 and Day 90, from both the axillae (underarm area) and inguinal (groin) regions.
Results were remarkable. After 90 days of supplementation, researchers observed a sevenfold increase in Lactobacillus acidophilus, a known skin-beneficial species included in the Activ Daily formula. Two other health-promoting bacteria also saw dramatic increases: Dubosiella newyorkensis increased 37-fold, and Roseomonas vastitus increased 40-fold. These bacterial strains are linked to improved immune regulation, stronger skin barrier function, and reduced inflammation—key factors in preventing chronic skin conditions.
Importantly, culture-based methods showed a statistically significant reduction in Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, a pathogen commonly associated with canine skin infections and atopic dermatitis. While this harmful species remained present in low levels overall, its prevalence was notably reduced in the group receiving Activ Daily. Sequencing data also revealed a broad reduction in Staphylococcus species over time, confirming that Activ Daily helped shift the microbiome toward a healthier and more balanced state.
This study provides the first high-resolution, species-level insight into how an oral dog supplement can positively influence skin health through the gut-skin axis. Previous studies had only examined topical or short-read sequencing methods, which lacked the precision and reliability achieved here. Thanks to the use of PacBio HiFi sequencing technology, the research team was able to identify over 3,800 bacterial species and track significant changes with confidence.
